Organic Swing is…..

Janeen - Vocals

Jazz lover since childhood, inspired by my dad's trumpet tunes. New York native. Systems Analyst by profession, but my heart beats for jazz! Obsessed with vocalists like Betty Carter, Billie Holiday and Cassandra Wilson, just to name a few. Fitness fanatic & proud cat mom!

Jim - Keyboards

My father was an amateur piano player and huge jazz fan, buying Coltrane, McCoy Tyner and Mingus records when they were brand new releases. I grew up hearing all those sounds all the time, along with jazz radio at all hours of the day and night. When I was 7 years old, my dad decided I should start classical piano lessons, and I appreciate that I got that early start. In high school my interests branched out to popular music and playing in bands, and I had a lot of fun with some really inventive prog-rock stuff. I’m back to jazz now, finding my own voice, influenced by contemporary powerhouses like Robert Glasper and Brad Mehldau.

Brent - Flute

I’ve always been into music – influenced by my parents, both music minors and educators who kept singing and playing all through life.  As a kid, I rebelled against the “boring” piano lessons and after joining the school band on tuba, was mystified by all those reed players who needed to use more than 3 fingers on their horns!  When asked to return a borrowed flute to a friend in college, this found me opening the case and perusing that mystery for myself.  When my friend stopped by to pick up her flute, I played her the lick I’d figured out from the Chicago tune “Colour My World” and she proceeded to insist that she give me lessons for the next year! For my college graduation, she gifted me with that flute and that has sparked so much joy in playing with others for many years: a rock band, Expect Delays for nearly 25 years; weekly folk sessions with friends for 10 more; monthly jazz jams, and now as a part of Organic Swing. Music is truly a wonderful thing, and I appreciate it deeply in all its forms and grateful to my many friends who have shared it with me.

Victor - Congas

I was born and raised in Mexico City. And when I came to America I went to live in Hartford CT where I encountered a big Latin community, particularly Puerto Rican, where I was exposed to Salsa music. I fell in love with it. I enjoyed listening to it, dancing and later playing it. I met Jim at his Jazz Jam session and he invited me to play with his band and I just love it and appreciate the opportunity they are giving me to be part of this wonderful group of musicians.

Mike - Drums

I started playing the drums in 6th grade. And if I had kept up with my education, I'd be in my 51st grade by now! I played in all the school bands through middle school, high school and college. I started playing in a jazz combo in high school, and have continued with various other types of music including big band jazz, fusion, rock, blues and funk.
